It holds the record for the largest production number of any jet of its type and was the world's first supersonic jet trainer. The T-38C is an upgraded version of the T-38A, featuring structural and avionics improvements.

After rejecting an initial engine design from General Electric for being too large and costly, Northrop developed a smaller engine, leading to the successful design of the Talon.
